Chaperones
by Gretchen956 inrichie's thread got me wondering what ever happened to the practice of chaperoning???
i mean really, was this just a regional thing where i grew up?
we had to have a chaperone always with the opposite gender even if we were old!

Yep, it's still in full-force in New Zealand!!!
When I was going out with....okay, COURTING a dub girl, her mother would go ape-shit if we didn't have a chaperone with us when driving together or in town together. Get this, the other parents in her cong' eventually wouldn't let their kids (5y/o to 18 y/o) chaperone us, due to the amount of interrogation they got from my girl's mother........
My Dad wasn't so concerned, he couldn't have given a shit less I suspect, but the pressure that girl lived under was incredible. Her mum told her that if she ever left the "truth' or done anything 'sinful' that she would disown her and she would get nothing at all if her mother died etc....no financial provisions or anything!!!
I guess it's fortunate that her mum never knew that on our way back to her place from mine <before an assembly no less>, which was a 2 hour drive, she completely snogged my face off!!! She pulled her car over and said to me "this is probably the last chance we get for a few days so..." and away we went, kissing up a storm.......
Ah, the sinful life is far more fun!!!
Wouldn't you agree? :D

New Light and Sports
by pratt1 in.
although i am pleased when i hear about children of dubs who are pursuing sports at the high school, college and professionally level, it also disturbs me that so many of us in the past lost out on these opportunities because of the rigid views of the dubdum.. a friend of mine that is still active says that many of these changes or new light occurrs because thinking dubs stand up to the elders and make these personal decisions for their family without the advice of elders.. do you ever feel that you should/could stand up for your beliefs even when they are against the advice of elders, eventually you could inspire change within the religion?.
i ask because through out history change has ocurred because of standing up to those in authority.. examples, gandi, martin luther king, susan b. anthony to name just a few.. what are your thoughts?.

Interesting topic!!!
I say that because my Dad was, as we were growing up a very "by the letter of the law" Witness, in nearly every aspect of the dub life...
Except that he knew the benefit that playing extra-curricular sports brings to most kids, and in particular his. My sister and I played in various school sports teams, not only in school hours but also at weekends....oooooh, how sinful!!! Shit, we excelled at our sports too-I was chosen as captain for my rugby team, selected to play representative levels etc.......so while the rest of young guys and girls in the cong' were going off the rails, we were doing just fine....Dad would spend saturday mornings with us at our games - netball, rugby..... I guess his winter field service hours were low those days :D Jeez, he was an MS too!!
I know the Elders and MS's and their <Stepford> wives were all pissed off with Dad (because he refused to be told by others how to raise HIS kids), and although us kids eventually saw through the bullshit dis-Orginization and left, we are still pretty good kids who work hard, have great lives, don't drain the system and aren't on lockdown...like others I've heard about!!
So much for wholesome congregational-only <commune> activities!!!

Wooooooooh, fuck!!!!!!
I remember reading all those articles when I was young (and impressionable), man they bring back some memories!!!! I was scared shitless by the references to Deicide, Slayer etc.......... I guess that was the aim!
Well I bought "Edward The Great"-Iron Maiden a few days back, love those guys...oops did I say love??? Sorry, I'm really not idolatrous! Have some sympathy for the devil though, he gets its pretty hard these days :D Jeez, you'd have to be a nut to take words seriously enough to kill a dog, to rape someone, to commit a murder in the name of music!!!
Right, can you just turn up that Marilyn Manson vs Eminem album, ta !

The real reason why young people get baptized
by free2beme inthe real reason why young people get baptized .... to make their parents happy and proud.
to be able to get married (which is some cases, is to get away from parents).
... okay, okay, i know it depends on how young we are talking.

I was baptized just after I turned 16.....my cousins were baptized young so I thought I'd follow the trend, besides I thought I was "ready" for it :D
Only 3 guys were baptized that day, and the first guy (related through marriage) left a year or so later....then I joined the great exodus!!
Oddly enough, my cousins were Dis'd early this year....Pride before a huge fall!! (it's a loooong story).

JW kids and the national anthem humiliation......
by kid-A infor me, school was extremely stressful as a jw kid.
the worst part had to be my morning dose of humiliation being forced to walk out of the room as the national anthem came on the loudspeakers (first god save the queen, then, oh canada).
the other kids found this completely bizarre, and several of my "patriotic" minded teachers really resented me for doing this (despite the obvious fact i had no choice in the matter but was being forced into this by my parents).. how could anybody force this public humiliation on a small child or teen-ager, already having to deal with the normal stresses of growing up and worrying about their public image with their peers???

I remember at primary school and intermediate school that "God Defend New Zealand" was played at the beginning of important assemblies, and also for ANZAC Day.....we always entered the school hall after the anthem had finished, and feeling proud because I was a soldier of Jehovah it was never a problem to me!!
Occasionaly I did feel embarrassed though, especially as I got older...I got on well with the "cool" girls at school, and had the hots for a few of them so being different in that way was hard, oh the struggles of being young
But now, well it's all changed-I'm a very proud Kiwi, always stand tall and place my hand on my heart for the anthem....not because we're better than anyone else, but because I'm proud of my heritage.
